It is possible to use this light in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity. This vintage table lamp was probably made by the English Company Beswick. It has many of the distinctive design features: the dog theme, a quality figurine depicted with realism, very good colour & glazed china. The Yorkshire Terrier dog was very popular in the early 20th Century, and often represented in many objects, paintings and decorations for the home. With its delicate proportions and cute animal theme in the Art Deco style, this light works well as a side lamp on a table, desk, or shelf. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Country, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, or Contemporary. The composition is simple but effective: a ceramic figurine of a Yorkshire Terrier dog stands sideways in front of a ceramic trunk of a tree, that itself becomes the column of the lamp leading to the lamp holder. The dog is standing on a rectangular ceramic base. The ceramic composition has excellent accurate detail & texture, complemented by a fine gloss finish and a nice colour. From the back the figurine is as well detailed as the front. Cleverly the silk cable comes out from a discrete hole in the tree trunk. At the bottom there is new black felt to protect the furniture when this lamp is in place. The lamp holder has a gilt metal cover that adds a golden tone to the design. The light is finished with a removable new clip-on black silk lampshade. This is lined gold metallic and edged with a black fabric trim. Carries one standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present fitted with a Candle Clear light bulb of 25 Watts, as photographed, which is included in the price. It could also take other types of E14 light bulbs. This vintage lamp is in very good condition. There is patina present on the metal in line with age & wear. The ceramic figurine is sound with no chips or damages. Additional dimensions: The base alone (without the lampshade) has the following dimensions - Height: 20.5 cm, Width: 13 cm & Depth: 8.5 cm. It was not until the 1930`s, and specifically the introduction of a high fired bone china in 1934, that the firm turned to the animal modelling for which they would become known for. In 1969, the business was sold to Doulton & Co. Ltd. The factory closed in 2002 and the brand John Beswick was sold in 2004.
