Description:

A late 18th century/early 19th century Welsh oak pot board dresser from the Cilycwn, Carmarthenshire area of good original patina (colour). This piece has a groove at the back of the top to enable plates to be displayed - there was also probably a plate rack attached in the past. The top has curved corners to the front which is a unique design of the Cilycwn area. These curved corners were known as clustiau in Welsh, meaning 'ears'. It is thought that this unique design was possibly created due to the area being known for its animals and sheep: they were distinguished by marks on their ears so maybe this was also a way to distinguish the Cilycwn dresser! A cabinet maker linked with this design of furniture and in this area was called William Williams. The three drawers are shallow in design with oak linings and two brass handles and an escutcheon plate on each (not original brass work but this is not uncommon as fashions changed over the years)There is a deep rail underneath the drawers with an applied moulding. The base has four turned legs to the front and two square legs to the back with a pot board, again very useful for displaying items. This dresser is in good condition.
